App Review: Mad Dog McCree Game for iPhone

Mad Dog McCree is a western first-person shooter from the early nineties. In 1990, this game attracted attention for it’s movie-like presentation. Players armed with a light gun would enter a world of deadly outlaws and gunfighters. Commanding the role of the unnamed stranger, the gamer is confronted with the task of protecting a small frontier town from dastardly villains. Objectives are simple; free the sherrif, protect the mayor and his beautiful daughter, shoot the bad guys and kill the boss.

This game sounds like fun. You get the feeling that playing Mad Dog McCree would be like entering a Sergio Leone film where you get to be Clint Eastwood saving the day. There is a lot of potential here for good testosterone-driven shoot-em-up fun. On paper this game seems to guarantee good times. Mad Dog McCree has been seen on many gaming platforms and now Digital Leisure Inc. has brought it to iOS.

This is easily one of the worst games released for your iPhone this year. A throwback like this would be fun for it’s nostalgia and late twentieth-century made-for-tv style, but the execution and transfer to the iOS platform makes it almost unplayable. The graphics are poorly rendered for the screen size and tapping to shoot enemies takes up almost all of your screen visibility. The timing of this game requires the player to attempt levels over and over just to get ready for enemies that can barely be seen.

Mad Dog McCree is not worth your time or money. For $4.99 you are treated to bad acting, ugly graphics and annoying characters, poor controls, multiple cheesy death scenes featuring an undertaker that resembles a shaved Abraham Lincoln, awkward cut scenes featuring poorly staged stunts and a sense that you’ve just wasted your hard earned money and free time. Skip this one. Mad Dog McCree is no fun at all.

QUICK HITS:

Controls: Ineffective. Useless.
Time Suck: Wasted hours with no reward.
Replay/Addiction Value: Poor and frustrating.
Polish: Ugly and gritty and bland.
