Food In Focus: The 39 Ingredients in a Twinkie
News came last week that Hostess, the mother of the beloved Twinkie, has filed for bankruptcy. With an 860 million dollar debt load and over 100,000 creditors — mostly pensions and labor unions tied to their work force — the king of cakes filled with mystery cream is about to crumble.
This isn’t the first time they’ve seen trouble. The company just spent the last three years pulling themselves out of debt (or trying to) by restructuring. They say the Chapter 11 filing does not mean that they stop production of America’s most mysterious snack. The company has made it 82 years and has brought us some of the most iconic snack foods we know.
Are we saying goodbye to the cream-filled sponge cake? Perhaps we should… Those fuckers, although simply yellow and white, cake and cream, are actually made up of 39 different ingredients. Writer and author Steve Ettlinger came out with the book that pulled back the curtain on the naughty, fatty missile of cake. In his book, Twinkie, Deconstructed, he tells the tale of all that goes into each of the 500 million snack cakes they make every year. Oh, and contrary to popular belief, they do not last forever.
Check out artist Dwight Eschliman’s take on Twinkie ingredients below. You can check out each ingredient HERE on his site and he also has a book available. Eye opening.
