Tasting Notes: Canadian Club Tips Its Gangster Hat to Boardwalk Empire

Ever heard of the Prohibition? While the United States thought alcohol was too detrimental to society, Canada was making bank. In Windsor, Canada, Canadian Club was cranking out 20,000 cases of whisky each month to smuggle over the Detroit, Michigan border. Canadian Club Whisky is rumored to have been a favorite of the infamous Al Capone who illegally distributed the spirit across the United States. American entrepreneurs could purchase a case of whiskey for $7 in Canada and resell it for $75 a case to their drinking buddies over the border.
In honor of the season premier of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire (September 25th at 9pm) Canadian Club Whisky has created special edition bottles for their premium 6 year variety. There are only 100,000 bottles of the Canadian Club 6 Year Old which come with a Boardwalk Empire flask wrapped in Boardwalk Empire-branded “neckers.” We think that’s a pretty groovy move.
It’s also interesting to consider that how although the times have changed, you can still mix, taste, and enjoy the same drinks the characters from Boardwalk Empire did, allowing an authentic connection to the past. You know what they say: the more things change, the more they stay the same. We say, “bottoms up.” Here’s to lounging with drink-in-hand like real gents and dames, gangsters and broads.
