You can get a number of different voices available on the market for your GPS — everyone from Gary Busey to Mr. T.  Hell, they even have a Daria themed GPS. How crazy is that?

Now you can finally have a Star Wars-themed GPS. They are officially licensed from Lucasfilm Ltd. and feature Darth Vader and Yoda/Obi-Wan Kenobi . Each different voice will cost $12.95 at Best Buy or from Garmin’s website.

According to Locutio, the company behind the voices, “The voice of Yoda features the Jedi Master’s characteristic speech patterns paired with occasional dialogue from Obi-Wan Kenobi taken straight from the classic films. Instructing drivers and passengers alike in the ways of the Force, Yoda offers sage guidance with phrases that include: ‘Right you should turn, then sharp left…control, control, if a Jedi, you wish to be’, and “After 200 yards turn right… then bear left… but not to the dark side.’”

As for Darth Vader, he guides you with such phrases as ”Proceed to the highlighted route. Your destiny lies with me. Obi-wan knew this to be true.” and “Traffic ahead. The Emperor has foreseen it.”

If you buy the voices, you also get an X-Wing or Tie Fighter as the icon that represents your position on the map, depending on the voice that you choose. Lastly, you also get a slew of Star Wars special effects sounds. Imagine taking a hard left only to hear a laser sound blasting out of your GPS.

For fans of Star Wars who own Garmin GPS devices, this is definitely going to be a big deal. And even for those who are just casual fans of the series, it’s a new way to make your drive a little less boring.

Here it is in action:

I sort of like this idea, but the catch phrases would quickly grow old. I’d much prefer to just have Crocodile Dundee or whoever (at this point in my life, I don’t think I’d go with a STAR WARS voice, though my mom does own a GARMIN which my dad and I used on our trip to see Charlie Sheen’s live tour) plainly stating directions. “Turn left”

That’s all you need to hear, and in the midst of heavy traffic, anything beyond that is unwelcome noise (IMHO)

PS do Oz and Jones do the voice work, or were sound alikes used?
