Tasting Notes: Primal Strips Vegan Jerky
We’re lucky enough to have companies send us their products to try, and although we’ve gotten a few doozies, we share only the best with you guys.
August 2010 was the last time that I consumed any land meat. While it was somewhat of a challenge at first (yes, I dreamt of eating cheeseburgers and ham for two months) any cravings I had for meat ceased and I began to have a different taste for everything veggie. Foods in general began to taste different.
I have always been a relatively healthy eater, but I noticed that I really began to enjoy the taste of veggies. I say this because meat-eaters should keep that in mind before sampling meatless vegan jerky.
Primal Strips are meatless vegan jerky. I jumped at the opportunity to sample and review Primal Strips. I’ll be honest though, I tend to stay away from meat-substitute items because what’s the point when you’re vegetarian? What intrigued me about the Primal Strips was simply wanting to see how it compared to actual meat-containing jerky. Would it chew the same as real jerky? Do they attempt to make it taste like meat?
First off, here are the flavors that were so kindly sent to us:
- Texas BBQ - A nice light BBQ flavor.
- Hickory Smoked - Great smoky flavor.
- Mesquite Lime - One of my personal favorites- a little tangy and smoky.
- Teriyaki - It had that great terikayi flavor we all know and love.
- Thai Peanut - Most unique. A light taste of peanuts and a little sweetness.
- Hot & Spicy – Another one of my personal favorites. Not too spicy.
Yes, these are all typical jerky flavors. And I enjoyed them. Every flavor tasted as they should. And the flavors weren’t overdone. I didn’t feel as though they were trying to make it taste like meat either. The Primal Strips do have a meaty flavor to them, but not in the same sense as actual meat. Think of how beans, certain grains and mushrooms might have a meatiness to them — that’s what you get when eating Primal Strips.
I didn’t feel as though they were trying to make it taste like meat…
Real jerky has a very distinctive chew to it. You all know what I’m talking about. Primal Strips do a great job of giving you the satisfaction of a great jerky chew without making you feel like you’re just substituting it for the “real” thing.
If you get the chance to bite into one of these delicious snacks (and you should) be glad to know that Primal Strips are all-natural. They do not contain any cholesterol, GMO’s, preservatives, artificial colors, or MSG. They are vegan and kosher and 97% fat free. All wonderful things!
Even if you are a meat eater I can recommend Primal Strips. Just be sure to keep in mind that you won’t get the same meatiness as a “real” jerky. They are a flavorful, healthy alternative, high-protein snack that won’t weigh you down when you’re on the go. Visit their website for more info.

Looks like dog treats.
P.S. Green Milk-Bones are actually rather tasty.
