The Daily Slice: Design That Will Make You Wish You Were 12 Again
The world is overflowing with beautiful and interesting things competing for our attention, and if you live in the real world, it’s a tall task to include appreciating the hell out of art on a daily basis. Really, who can find the time? That’s why Guy.com offers a “daily slice.” It’s a small taste of what’s going on in the world of art and design–something we find beautiful or inspiring or worthy of a peek. We’re happy to serve it up.
Some of the best things in life bring out the kid in us. You know — the version of yourself with a huge smile, inspired, happy, and back to reclaiming your imagination for yourself. In celebration of that, we thought we’d share some design that might bring you back to that time in your life… back before she tore out your heart, before the student loans crushed you, and before you’d already put in a few years working for the man.
Plastic Bunk Beds by Marc Newson
Created by designer Marc Newson for the Italian furniture company Magis, these bunk beds are simply four pieces of molded polyethylene with easy to wipe, smooth surfaces. Reminiscent of the plastic toys we all grew up with, the color and texture at human scale smash our Lilliputian fantasies, giving us a cozy place to rest and hide, this time at the scale of G.I. Joe figurines. This ain’t no bed. It’s a toy. Or a bed. And a toy.
Fussball Coat Rack
Etsy seller and designer TodoCecilia from Auckland, New Zealand creates and hand paints coat racks that resemble individual fussball racks. With its own metal frame and spinning soccer players, it begs a mean spin every time you hang your coat. Take that, housecleaning!
Life-sized Lego Furniture
We found a company that sells modular lego blocks — at human scale — that you can assemble yourself. It’s refreshing to see a company that caters to the designer and master in us all that says you should control and arrange your own environment to suit yourself. Known as LunaBlocks, the blocks designed by Thierry Nahon & Philippe Landecker come in multiple colors. It’s good to see that they pushed the practical element one step further: they come in different materials like glass, polypropylene (think kid-safe plastic), a cushiony lego comfortable enough for seating, and even cast steel. When it comes to putting together furniture, the world is your oyster — or toybox, depending on how you look at it.
Bandai Gun Oclock Alarm Clock

Now you have an excuse to sleep with a gun under your pillow, and that’s not because you’re renting a first floor apartment in a community whose hospital treats the highest number of gunshot wounds in your country. No, this is fun. So is trying to hit the target three times while peering between eye boogers before the incessant beeping wakes up your kid preemptively. Hats off to the Japanese company who has been able to make the mundane process of waking up a truly transportational experience.
Hamburger Bed
It’s like waking up in a Claus Oldenburg world… The every day object has become a different scale and texture and you find your buns in between buns with Patty. The adult in you wonders how the bun and cheese slice will fit into the washer, and the twelve year old in you is wondering which facial expression would make you look most like a tomato slice. You might have a hard time making your hamburger dreams a reality, though. This bed, designed by Kayla Kromer is a one of a kind 8 foot wide creation that was sold on eBay in 2009 for a fundraiser.
Monster Stroller
Got kids? Little ones? Why should they get all of the toys? You can now seat your child in the brain of a Cyclops and watch him or her push themselves around town inside their own one-eyed steed. The twelve year old in us is jealous, but you’d be living through your little smiler as if you could fit your big ass in the stroller yourself, careening down the driveway snaggletooth first.
This abomination / totem / masterpiece comes from the mind of artist Elmer Presslee. More where that came from!
Never Make Your Bed Again Bed

Making your bed… It still sucks when you get older. When we saw the Letto Zip Bed, we saw an instant problem solved through design. If you have guests or a lady friend coming over, all you’d have to do is zip up this bitch, and your mess would be hidden away in a sheath of modern design. You might get that same rush you first felt when you believed you’d one-upped mom by cramming all loose items you owned under your bed and throwing down the Batman bed skirt or when you simply pulled your comforter up over your rumpled, stinking mess of a bed.
Make Your Own Cardboard Furniture
Nicola Staubli is living and working as an independent architect, designer and bike messenger. He’s also on a mission to provide free furniture and empower people to take charge of their own environment. You can download the patterns to make your own furniture in a bunch of different designs. It’s for kids, but as you can see, your adult butt can sit on the furniture at your own risk. Of all of the items on this list, this concept is immediately accessible to you at no cost. You can check out his philosophy and download patterns for free at Foldschool.com.
Oversized pebble pillows
Smarin, a French design company came up with these large scaled pebble pillows that are soft enough to sleep and jump on. These are called “Livingstones” and the website calls them a “modular, practical and
poetic ensemble for the floor.” We call them fucking fun.

Some of these don’t appeal to me (the cool blues and weird angles of the bunk bed are too depressing and I have no need for a bunk bed), but some are pretty darn cool! The target practice alarm clock is a good idea, but I make it my mission to pop out of bed the instant I snap awake, so turning off my alarm has never been a problem. The monster stroller is pretty great, but it’s not for sale it’s a work of art, sadly (and I am blessedly child free). The no mess bed is cool, but I don’t think I’d like it. I don’t ever use a top sheet, I just use a comforter, because I easily become claustrophobic under the covers. I fear being zipped in like that would be unbearable
PS The origami furniture is very clever
